This site won't be updated further, and sales for all artists are no longer through Protagonist Records. http://store.protagonistrecords.net will still go to the main storefront page, but the links to the artists in the store may become broken if/when the artists decide to remove or change their own store pages. Those artist store pages are no longer a part of Protagonist, and as such, Protagonist has nothing to do with any sales conducted therein.

I will, however, leave this site up for a while longer, in case folks happen upon it and want to check out a ton of cool free music that's archived here.

Protagonist was and is still owned by SGX and still publishes and sells SGX music.

What's up, listeners! You may have noticed things have crawled to a stop here at Protagonist. I haven't been updating with new free tracks, and haven't been releasing new albums in the store. It's been a long time coming, but I've decided to cease operating this frontpage music blog and the sales operations of all artists but SGX.

In the 2.5 years I operated Protagonist, we got a lot of listeners, sold plenty of music, and had a bunch of fun, but sales and hits never got to a point where I feel keeping things going would be worth it for both the artists whose music I sell and for the profits to be worth my time. I recognize many things I could do to turn things around, change the business, and get things back on track, but I am prioritizing my time and interests right now to focus on my SGX music and videogame development projects.

It's the right thing to do for me and the artists on this label. When I started Protagonist, it wasn't so easy to sell your own music online without going through iTunes and whatnot, so my web design and cart software skills were unique and helpful to artists, but now it is very easy to sell online independently, so I'm not offering a lot of an advantage anymore. That, plus an unsatisfactory regular amount of hits to the site, meant it just wasn't smart to keep spending time on this without some sort of major overhaul in how this business operates.

This Sunday, May 1st, I will be paying my artists their last paycheck for sales and then link their store pages directly into their Paypal accounts, taking Protagonist's hands out of the moneystream between customer and artist. The artist will have control over their album pages on the store to do with what they want. They may keep selling, or they may remove them - it's up to the artist. I am not deleting this website for a while, but expect broken links and whatnot as things dissolve.

Protagonist Records (as part of Protagonist Media LLC) will continue on as the label I release my SGX music under, but this site will not be updated anymore. The store will still run, but only to sell SGX music. It is possible Protagonist will resurface the future, but I currently do not have any plans.

I want to say thanks a ton to all the listeners, the artists, and those that supported us by buying stuff! I had fun running Protagonist. I don't feel like this is a failure. It was just time to focus elsewhere.
